"We love our handiwork."

Josef Michel

The Michel winery in Vogtsburg-Achkarren, on the Kaiserstuhl, was founded in the 1960s. in 1983, Josef Michel joined his parents' business as a trained cooper. His son Robin is in the starting blocks and represents the third generation.

Many consider Josef Michel's Burgundy wines to be among the best in Baden. "Origin" and "craftsmanship" are key terms for the winemaker. They describe how wines characterised by terroir are produced here with patience and dedication. This includes restrained cellar work that emphasises the characteristics of the site and vintage through "controlled idleness".

The vines in the Grosser Lage (VDP) Schlossberg vineyard are planted on barren tephrite. This is 16-million-year-old lava, which challenges the plants in the heat and naturally ensures a low yield level.

The vineyards in Achkarren are used for the local wine, they are located on the western edge of the Kaiserstuhl and are characterised by volcanic weathered soils and loess terraces.
