Tempos Vega Sicilia is an internationally successful company based in Spain and run by the Alvarez family. in 1982, they took over Bodegas Vega Sicilia in Valbuena de Duero - one of the oldest wineries in the country - and developed it into a name that now stands for top quality worldwide. Since 1992, further wineries have been successively acquired.
Under the Tempos Vega Sicilia umbrella, there are now four other wineries in addition to the original bodega: Alión in the Ribera del Duero, Pintia in the Toro region, Macán in the Rioja and Tokaj-Oremus in Hungary.
Bodegas Vega Sicilia has its roots in the 1840s. in 1864, what was initially mainly agricultural land was converted into a winery. The owner at the time, Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, planted French cuttings of the Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Malbec, Merlot and Pinot Noir grape varieties. This was followed by very successful and then also very turbulent years and changes of ownership. With the 1915 vintage, the winery had already gained a worldwide reputation, especially with its distribution at the royal courts.
When the Alvarez family took over in 1982, the cellar was modernised and the vineyards were upgraded and expanded. Tempranillo is grown here on over 200 hectares, 80 % of which is Tempranillo. The remaining area is divided between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
