The Velich winery in Seewinkel on Lake Neusiedl has a history that goes back around 90 years. However, it wasn't until the 1990s that Heinz and Roland Velich turned wine production from a hobby into a full-time business and created Austria's first cult Chardonnay with their Chardonnay "Tiglat". Roland later dedicated himself to red wine with his Moric winery, while Heinz continued to refine his white wines and turned them into something truly timeless. His wines reflect this character trait - calm, composed and carefully produced with patience and restraint. The influence of the unique landscape of Lake Neusiedl can be recognised in every bottle he produces. They have changed significantly over the course of time. The first "Tiglats" were still voluminous wines in a rather international style that was very fashionable at the time. He then went on to express more of the terroir or the "sense of place" with his wines. Today, he uses methods that require little intervention, starting with organic cultivation of the vineyards, without officially labelling them as such.
The region from which the wines originate is called Fertő-Tó in neighbouring Hungary and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its exceptional climate, which is influenced by both Pannonian and Mediterranean elements. This diverse environment has a major influence on the flavours of Heinz Velich's wines, but also on the names of the wines. „Tiglat“ stands for the place where it all began for him, while „Darscho“ is a tribute to one of the salt pans of Lake Neusiedl. His „To“, on the other hand, stands for the lake that the vineyards border.
