The von Othegraven winery in Kanzem on the Saar has been in existence since the 16th century. It is one of the founding members of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP) and has some of the best sites in the region.
in 2010, Günther Jauch and his wife Thea took over the winery. It has been in the family since 1805 and is now run by the fifth generation.
Only Rieslings are produced. The vines are planted on slopes facing the Saar with inclines of up to 65 degrees. The Kanzemer Altenberg, the heart of the winery, is one of the steepest and, at 250 metres long, also one of the longest steep slopes in the world. Slate in various degrees of weathering characterises the soil structure.
The cooler climate compared to the Moselle leads to longer ripening periods. The harvest continues well into November. The aim of the cellar work that follows is to let the "terroirs resound in their original form." Therefore, the must ferments on natural yeasts.
Since 2014, von Othegraven has been FAIR'N GREEN certified. The seal stands for sustainability in viticulture and includes the areas of environmental protection, farm management and social commitment.
