In 1974, civil engineer and career changer Joseph Phelps came onto the market with the first "Insignia'. Since then, he has quickly established himself as one of the top Cabernet producers in Napa Valley. 93% Cabernet, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec make up the blend for the 2019 cuvée of Phelps' cult wine. Once again, it offers an impressively long and varied firework of Cabernet flavours on the nose and palate. Cassis, cherry, plum, a hint of raspberry and elderberry, plus peppery notes, cedar and lead pencil, topped off with a good chunk of dark chocolate. All of this with great intensity and purity - and yet with an almost aristocratic elegance. A cult wine? Yes, most certainly and quite rightly so!
