Penfolds set the benchmark for the Australian multi-region blend, and Bin 389 has carried that idea since 1960, when Max Schubert married Cabernet structure to Shiraz richness. Peter Gago oversees the style in the cellar today. The fruit comes from Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Padthaway, where 2024 delivered small berries and firm tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon (53%), Shiraz (47%) spend 13 months in American oak hogsheads, 34% of them new, some of them barrels that held the previous Grange. Hence the nickname Baby Grange. A beautiful Cabernet nose. Cool, carried by its acidity, very fresh, very polished. Behind that a dense, powerful palate with real length.
