In the heart of Gascony, not far from Montréal-du-Gers, lies Domaine de Pellehaut - a family business that epitomises the quiet but sustainable renaissance of south-western France like no other. The history of the estate is inextricably linked to the Béraut family, who have been intertwining agriculture, viticulture and distillation here for generations. Hand on heart: what do you know about Gascony? Are you thinking of d'Artagnan and the other three musketeers? Armagnac? You can associate all of this with this region, and it also produces some of the most award-worthy everyday wines available today. One of the top wine estates in this segment is Domaine de Pellehaut. Originally, the focus was clearly on Armagnac, the region's traditional spirit, but in recent decades the wines of Pellehaut have developed into an independent and increasingly serious mainstay. The starting conditions are formative: rolling hills, predominantly sandy and loamy soils with calcareous inclusions and a climate influenced by the Atlantic, which ensures sufficient rainfall and fresh nights. This combination favours aromatic, acidic white wines in particular. Grape varieties such as Colombard, Ugni Blanc, Gros Manseng and Sauvignon Blanc form the basis for a style that emphasises clarity, freshness and immediate accessibility - without appearing banal.
Colombard in particular, long underestimated as a purely mass-produced variety, shows its potential at Pellehaut: citric freshness, green fruit, often a hint of exoticism and a lively, animating acidity structure. Integrated into cuvées, this creates a profile that works both as an uncomplicated everyday wine and - in more selective qualities - can develop astonishing depth. At the same time, the estate is working with Gros Manseng on somewhat more structured, longer-lived white wines that impress with ripe fruit, fine flavour and substance.
But Pellehaut does not limit itself to the white wine segment. Rosés and red wines - often based on Tannat, Merlot or Cabernet - are also part of the portfolio, but always remain stylistically on the side of balance and drinkability. The influence of Armagnac production is subtly noticeable here: a pronounced understanding of maturity, the interplay of fruit and structure and the importance of time as a quality factor.
What makes Domaine de Pellehaut special is less the search for iconic top wines and more the consistent focus on authenticity and precision in the mid-range segment. Here, wines are created that clearly reflect their origins, are crafted with meticulous attention to detail and show an often underestimated region in a new light.
