Château Trotanoy Winery

"The first crus from Pomerol since the end of the 18th century."

The Moueix family

One of the names internationally associated with the rise of Bordeaux is undoubtedly that of the Moueix family. jean-Pierre Moueix started his wine business in 1937, and vineyards were also acquired from the 1950s onwards.

Today, Moueix is not only one of the most important trading houses, but also owns no fewer than 16 wine estates - including Château La Fleur-Pétrus and Château Hosanna in Pomerol and Château Bélair-Monange in St-Émillion. Christian Moueix and his son Edouard have long been at the helm of the company.

Château Trotanoy was acquired in 1953 and has been considered one of the best in Pomerol since the end of the 18th century. The soil is partly a very dense mixture of clay and gravel and can harden to an almost concrete-like hardness, hence the name "Trotanoy": "too difficult" to maintain.

The vineyard slopes gently to the west. At the highest point it contains a good proportion of gravel, with clay dominating as the altitude decreases. This soil structure gives the wine strength, depth and complexity. Trotanoy is vinified in small concrete vats, while ageing takes place in oak barrels.

Trotanoy is a deep, complex, highly concentrated Merlot with excellent ageing potential. It has a deep colour and a dense, powerful nose. Dark chocolate flavours unfold on the palate. The concentration of flavour indicates the great age of the vines.
