On the eastern shore of Lake Garda, in Bardolino, the Zeni family is one of the defining names of the Veronese wine landscape. For more than 150 years, the winery has combined the classic areas of origin around the lake with the better-known appellations of Valpolicella. Zeni thus stands for a region that is often underestimated because it is strongly characterised by tourism, but in fact has a remarkable diversity of soils, microclimates and grape varieties.
The traditional red varieties of Veneto take centre stage: Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara. They are used to produce Bardolino, Chiaretto, Valpolicella, Ripasso and Amarone - wines that range from light, juicy, easy-drinking to concentrated, long-matured styles. Zeni clearly and comprehensibly depicts this range. The wines do not appear over-moulded, but focus on clean fruit, moderate structure and an accessible, regional signature.
Bardolino in particular shows where the estate's real strength lies: in the freshness, lightness and effortless flavour of Corvina. While many wineries in Veneto have long focussed on density and alcohol, Zeni retains a certain clarity even in the stronger wines. Even Amarone and Ripasso remain balanced rather than overloaded, with ripe cherry fruit, spice and a soft but not ponderous body.
Zeni is not a winery that defines itself through radical avant-garde or rare cult wines. Rather, its importance lies in its continuity: as a family business formed by Nino Zeni and managed by Fausto Zeni, as an ambassador for Lake Garda and as a reliable interpreter of classic Veronese wines.
