Buy wines of Weingut Knewitz
Hardly any other winery in Rheinhessen has shown such dynamism in recent years as that of Tobias, Corina and Björn Knewitz. Rieslings and Chardonnay have emerged from previously forgotten vineyards around Appenheim and are now in demand worldwide. It is therefore only logical that the winery has been a member of the VDP, the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates, since 1 January 2022.
The winery is located in Appenheim, not far from Bingen, and yet has its very own terroir. It is characterised by the Welzbach valley and the Westerberg, a prehistoric coral reef on which most of the estate's 25 hectares are located. Although this slope looks as if it has been moulded from a single piece of rock, you will find a wide variety of soil formations such as limestone, marl, rock and iron ore. The Appenheimer Hundertgulden, one of the most calcareous sites in the whole of Rheinhessen, and the St Laurenzi Chapel were already known before the Knewitz family. However, vineyards such as the Nieder-Hilbersheimer Honigberg or the Steinacker, as well as the Gau-Algesheimer Goldberg, only came back into the spotlight with the work of the Knewitz brothers.
Although the two brothers see themselves primarily as Riesling winemakers, they first came to prominence in the mid-2010s with their Chardonnay Réserve, a particularly reductive Chardonnay style that fits in perfectly with the times. Since then, they have continued to develop, working with certified organic methods, producing excellent Rieslings and, in addition to Chardonnay, outstanding Pinot Blancs. They are now also focussing on Pinot Noir, for which there are also excellent conditions at the Laurenzikapelle. Instead of increasing the number of hectares, Tobias Knewitz has concentrated in recent years on rounding off the estate, planting better vine material in some plots, experimenting with high vine density and fine-tuning every possible adjustment. With great success!
