Luddite Shiraz Südafrika - Walkerbay 2022
The Luddite Shiraz is the heart of the house, made solely from vines on their own farm at the foot of the Houw Hoek Mountains. Niels and Alice Verburg keep the fermentation deliberately cool and slow and give the skins plenty of time to work, which builds structure and depth. The 2022 then spent 24 months in barrel, 15 % of it new. Blackberry, lavender, fynbos, olive, pepper and spice on the nose. The palate is succulent and sappy, with pure fruit, lively acidity and crunchy tannin. Christian Eedes (Winemag) awards 96 points and asks whether this is the finest Luddite Shiraz ever made. We are close to saying yes.
